TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tempo's Chief Editor Setri Yasra has expressed respect for former Minister of Communication and Information (Kominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi's decision to file a complaint with the Press Council regarding a recent report on online gambling in the November 18-24, 2024 edition of Majalah Tempo (Tempo Magazine).
Setri affirmed Tempo's readiness to cooperate with the Press Council, providing explanations and addressing all allegations. “All journalistic processes at Tempo adhere to correct procedures and the code of ethics. Verified facts and data are presented in a balanced manner,” he said on Monday, November 18, 2024.
Budi Arie, represented by the legal team of the online gambling eradication unit, filed the complaint on Monday, November 18, 2024. They met with Press Council Chair Ninik Rahayu at the council's office in Central Jakarta.
Tempo's report delved into Budi Arie's alleged involvement in online gambling cases at the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi), previously the Kominfo Ministry led by Budi Arie. The report suggested that Budi Arie may have facilitated the placement of individuals who did not pass the selection process into positions overseeing online gambling site blocking.
The legal team of the online gambling eradication unit objected to the Majalah Tempo’s cover featuring a slot machine and questioned the description implicating Budi Arie Setiadi in backing online gambling. They argued that the cover and narrative were tendentious, defamatory, and lacked sufficient supporting evidence. They also claimed that the content had damaged Budi Arie's reputation.
“The cover and narrative of Majalah Tempo demonstrate malicious intent and unfairly judge the Complainant (Budi Arie),” said Silas Dutu, a member of the legal team, in a written statement on Monday, November 18, 2024.
Budi Arie demands that Tempo issue a public apology and retract, correct, and improve the magazine’s cover featuring his image.
