TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - When it comes to confidence that conditions this year will be better than last, Indonesians are the most optimistic people in the world. At least that is the picture painted by a survey conducted by the international research firm Ipsos Group, released on December 16, 2025. In a report titled Ipsos Predictions Survey 2026, Indonesia topped the rankings.
In the survey, Ipsos gathered opinions from 23,642 respondents under the age of 75 living in 30 countries. Conducted from October 27 to November 4, 2025, the research included the statement, “I am optimistic that 2026 will be a better year for me than it was in 2025.” The result showed that 90 percent of Indonesians agreed. The figure propelled Indonesia to the top of the global optimism index for 2026.
On the statement, “In 2026 people in my country will start to feel more optimistic about the long-term future,” Indonesia again ranked first, with 84 percent of respondents expressing confidence. In other words, Indonesians are beginning to develop long-term expectations after looking ahead to conditions in 2026. If circumstances improve, that confidence will grow stronger. But if the opposite occurs, optimism could quickly fade.
On the economy, 81 percent of Indonesians believe there will be improvement at the global level in 2026. Yet when asked about the possibility of a recession in 2026, 54 percent said they believed it could happen. Taken together, the survey suggests that most Indonesians see a chance of global economic recovery, while the likelihood of a recession at home remains very much on the table.
