TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Over 3,300 flights in the United States were canceled, and thousands more were delayed after the aviation authorities or the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) decided to reduce flights due to the government shutdown.
The flight disruptions have been piling up since last week. Due to a shortage of air traffic control staff, the FAA issued orders to reduce flights, affecting 42 airport towers and other centers. At least 12 major U.S. cities have experienced flight delays, including Atlanta, Newark, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York, as reported by Al Jazeera.
The FAA has instructed airlines to reduce their daily flight schedules by four percent, effective Friday, at 40 major airports due to safety concerns regarding air traffic control. The government shutdown, now at a record 39 days, has led to a shortage of air traffic control officers. Like other federal employees, they have not been paid for weeks.
Flights will be reduced by 6 percent starting from Monday, 8 percent on Thursday, and 10 percent on Friday. So far, 3,304 U.S. flights have been canceled, and more than 10,000 were delayed on Sunday alone. Over 1,500 flights were canceled on Saturday, following the cancellation of approximately 1,000 flights on Friday, according to FlightAware flight tracking website data.
Fate of U.S. Federal Workers
Earlier this week, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford stated that 20 to 40 percent of air traffic control officers have been absent from work for the past few days. He added that the U.S. airport system is showing "signs of stress," and air traffic cuts are being made "proactively" to ensure safety standards.
According to Al Jazeera, around 14,000 FAA air traffic control officers and approximately 50,000 transportation security officers at U.S. airports are working without pay as they are considered "essential workers." Many air traffic control officers were informed on Thursday that they will not receive compensation for the upcoming second pay period.
According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, about 730,000 civilian federal employees are in the same position, and approximately 670,000 other federal employees have been furloughed due to the government shutdown entering its 40th day on Sunday.
Government Shutdown to Affect the U.S. Economy
The pressure on the U.S. government to end the shutdown has intensified amid chaos at U.S. airports.
As of now, Democrats and Republicans have not reached an agreement on the U.S. budget. The Democratic Party blames the government shutdown on the Republican Party's refusal to negotiate on health insurance subsidies that will expire at the end of this year.
The U.S. will enter the busiest travel season at the end of the month during Easter or Thanksgiving, followed by a larger surge in travel around Christmas and New Year.
The impact will continue to grow. Greg Raiff, CEO of Elevate Aviation Group, stated that "This shutdown is going to impact everything from cargo aircraft to people getting to business meetings to tourists being able to travel. It’s going to hit the hotel taxes and city taxes. There’s a cascading effect that results from this thing."
