TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Labor Party President Said Iqbal stated that workers from various regions will protest until the provincial government meets their 2026 Provincial Minimum Wage (UMP) demands. Members of the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI) plan to rally at the Jakarta Presidential Palace and the House of Representatives.
"On January 8, 2026, thousands of laborers from Jakarta will join West Java workers to rally again at the Presidential Palace or the House of Representatives," Said Iqbal said in a virtual press conference on Friday, January 2, 2026.
Iqbal explained that the upcoming rally continues the demand for a higher UMP that the Jakarta Provincial Government has not yet met. The 2026 UMP in Jakarta is currently set at Rp5,729,876, which is a 6.17 percent increase from 2025.
However, labor organizations are demanding that the Jakarta UMP be raised to Rp5,898,511. They claim this figure matches the ideal Cost of Living (KHL) data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
Protesters also want wages to follow the recommendations of local mayors and regents rather than the rates set by West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi.
According to Said Iqbal, current wage amounts in several West Java cities do not align with what local leaders suggested.
The workers plan to travel by motorcycle from the Pantura road and East Priangan toward Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. They chose motorcycles because they are more cost-effective than renting buses. "Laborers from Cirebon, Subang, Purwakarta, Karawang, and Bekasi will enter Jakarta using motorcycles," Said Iqbal said.
He emphasized that the wage increase is vital for several reasons. First, it aims to raise living standards for Jakarta workers whose minimum wage is currently lower than in Bekasi and Karawang. This is especially important as Government Regulation No. 49 of 2025 on wages remains valid for 10 to 15 years.
The second reason is to boost purchasing power, particularly in Jakarta. Iqbal believes higher wages can stop the decline in spending power seen over the last few years. The third reason is to bridge the gap between income and the actual cost of living in Jakarta, which he claims requires Rp15 million per month.
These demands were first raised during a rally at the BSI Tower near the Horse Statue in Central Jakarta on Monday, December 29, 2025. Groups involved included KSPI, the National Workers Union (SPN), and the Indonesian Metal Workers Federation (FSPMI).
Police barriers prevented hundreds of workers from reaching the Presidential Palace. "We want to go to the Presidential Palace, but even the usual place at the Horse Statue is barricaded by the police," workers said in front of the BSI Tower on Monday.
Several regional governments have announced different UMP amounts based on Government Regulation No. 49 of 2025. The current formula calculates increases based on inflation plus economic growth multiplied by an "alpha" coefficient. For 2026, the central government set the alpha range between 0.5 and 0.9.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the 2026 UMP was determined using an alpha index of 0.75. "Thus, the Jakarta UMP increases by Rp333,115 from the previous amount of Rp5,396,761," he said.
Meanwhile, West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi announced the state's 2026 UMP and UMSP will reach Rp2,317,601 and Rp2,339,995. Dedi stated that sectoral wages suggested by cities and regencies must follow government rules.
Dedi argued that the current values are the most balanced. "In my view, they are ideal. But business owners consider them too expensive, and workers consider them too cheap. That is normal. The government stays in the middle," he said.
