The following is the list of the top 3 news on Tempo English today:
1. Trump Threatens Second Strike on Venezuela
United States President Donald Trump has opened the possibility of a second attack on Venezuela following the abduction of President Nicolas Maduro by the U.S. forces last weekend. Maduro is scheduled to have his first court appearance before a federal judge in New York on Monday, January 5th. The abduction was reportedly carried out through a military operation in Caracas.
According to a TRT World report, Trump said on Sunday that he could order a second strike if Venezuela does not cooperate with the U.S., particularly regarding the opening of the oil industry and the cessation of drug trafficking. This threat was made a day before Maduro was brought to a U.S. court.
"If she doesn’t do what’s right, she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro," said Trump.
2. Gold Prices Poised to Rise After US Attack on Venezuela
The world gold price closed at US$4,332 per troy ounce on Saturday, January 3, 2026. Meanwhile, domestically, the price of bullion gold produced by PT Aneka Tambang Tbk. (Antam) closed at Rp2,488,000 per gram.
Observer of currency and commodities Ibrahim Assuaibi predicts that the world gold price could soar to US$4,426 per troy ounce on Monday, January 5, 2026. Meanwhile, he predicts the precious metal price to rise to Rp2,518,000 per gram at the opening of trading next week.
The Director of PT Traze Andalan Futures stated that the precious metal price could rise to Rp2,610,000 per gram at the end of next week or on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
3. Why Trump Wants to Push Venezuela's Maduro Out of Power
The airstrikes on Caracas on January 3 have renewed speculation that the United States is seeking to remove Venezuela's president, Nicolas Maduro, by force.
In fact, an interview published in Vanity Fair in late December had already indicated that this was currently one of U.S. President Donald Trump's main priorities.
The interview made headlines at the time, as Trump's chief of staff Susie Wiles said her boss "wants to keep on blowing boats up until Maduro cries uncle" — an Americanism referring to a plea for mercy.
