TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Understanding the safest countries in Europe can be beneficial whether you're planning to travel, work, or even retire within the continent. As it provides valuable insights, there are several categories to determine the level of safety in a nation, including crime rates, political stability, peaceful international relations, and inclusive social and economic policies.

Produced by the international think tank Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the Global Peace Index (GPI) measures the relative peacefulness of nations and regions using 23 indicators grouped into three core categories: social safety, ongoing domestic and international conflict, and militarization.

What's more, Icelandic police reportedly don't even carry firearms while on duty.

2. Ireland - 1.303

As one of the world's most developed, wealthy, and happy nations, Ireland has a strong commitment to fostering a peaceful environment. Its exceptional safety standards, friendly citizens, top-quality education, and low corporate tax rates have attracted foreigners to the country, not only as travelers but also as students and expatriates.
