TEMPO.CO, JakartaChristmas is the most popular holiday in the United States, according to a recent study held by YouGov. While Americans are well known to be fond of any festivity in general, there are several holidays they exceptionally fancy the most.

Approximately 1,000 participants cast their votes for various holidays to demonstrate their views on each one. Check out the results below.

This article discovers the top 8 most popular holidays in the United States according to the data published by YouGov.

1. Christmas

Christmas in America takes pride as the most loved holiday of the year. With majestic trees, ringing carols across the streets and a lot of extraordinary decorations, one will live the best of times during this particular holiday.

States like Virginia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania are among the best places to bask in the Christmas celebration.

2. Thanksgiving

Annually celebrated in the United States, Thanksgiving is hailed as the second most popular holiday among Americans. Like any other culturally infused holiday, Thanksgiving is particularly rich in traditional symbolism including turkey, pumpkin pie, bread stuffing, and cranberries.

In modern times, Thanksgiving has moved away from its religious roots as the country has expanded greatly. Families living farther apart are seen sharing a meal during Thanksgiving.

3. Halloween

Halloween dates back several centuries and remains one of the most celebrated holidays in the country. Its history is closely tied to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which celebrated the end of the harvest and welcomed the beginning of winter.

In modern culture, Halloween involves many people of all ages, from young children to the elderly. The festivities revolve around fun traditions such as trick-or-treating, costume plays, and Jack o’ lanterns.

4. Easter

Easter, a major holiday of the Christian church, celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion, according to Britannica. Many schools don't have mandatory holidays on this day. However, the majority of Americans emphasize Christian traditions to some degree.

5. Mother’s Day

Mother's Day is observed in numerous countries in different regions like Europe, Asia, Australia, America and Africa. However, not many are aware that the origin of Mother's Day had its roots in the United States when Anna Jarvis held a memorial service in honor of her deceased mother in 1908.

After an intense campaign to promote Mother's Day as a national holiday, the U.S. Congress finally designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

6. New Year’s Day

New Year's Day is perhaps the holiday for which Americans travel the most, whether it be across international borders or to neighboring states.  Families of all kinds gather to celebrate the most anticipated day of the year.

Many Americans enjoy the televised New Year's festivities in New York City's Time Square with a toast in hand.

7. New Year’s Eve

New Year's Eve carries the same weight of significance in American holidays as the blasting fireworks can be heard in every bend of the states. Celebrating with loved ones is the most common celebration on New Year's Eve.

8. Fourth of July

The Fourth of July, also known as the United States Independence Day, is celebrated with fireworks and large parades with patriotic music. In recent times, some Americans prefer to stay at home and have their private barbecue party as an effort to enforce the Safe and Sane Fourth of July Movement.

These most popular holidays in the United States capture the hearts of most people because of their rich cultures and joyful celebrations.
