TEMPO.CO, Washington - President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed a proclamation withdrawing the United States from 35 non-UN international organizations and 31 United Nations entities that the administration said operate contrary to US national interests.
In a statement, the White House said the decision affects bodies including the Global Counterterrorism Forum, the International Energy Forum, the UN Peacebuilding Fund, and the UN International Trade Centre.
The administration argued that the organizations promote what it described as “radical climate policies, global governance, and ideological programs that conflict with U.S. sovereignty and economic strength.”
According to the White House, the move followed a comprehensive review of international intergovernmental organizations, conventions, and agreements in which the United States participates.
“These withdrawals will end American taxpayer funding and involvement in entities that advance globalist agendas over U.S. priorities, or that address important issues inefficiently or ineffectively such that U.S. taxpayer dollars are best allocated in other ways to support the relevant missions,” the statement said.
The White House did not immediately provide further details when asked about the scope or implementation of the decision.
Since beginning his second term a year ago, Trump has sought to significantly scale back US engagement with multilateral institutions.
His administration has moved to reduce funding for the United Nations, halt participation in the UN Human Rights Council, extend the suspension of funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), and withdraw from the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Trump has also announced plans to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris climate agreement.
