TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has voiced deep concern over the United States’ military action in Venezuela, warning that the operation sets a dangerous precedent in international relations and could undermine global norms on sovereignty.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X and monitored on Monday, January 5, 2026, Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government continues to closely observe developments in Venezuela.
“Indonesia expresses deep concerns over any actions involving the use or threat of force that carry the risk of creating a dangerous precedent in international relations,” the ministry said, as quoted by Antara.
The ministry cautioned that such actions could destabilize regional peace and security while eroding the fundamental principles of state sovereignty and diplomacy.
Indonesia stressed that the international community must respect the rights and will of the Venezuelan people to exercise their sovereignty and determine their country’s future.
In an earlier statement issued on Saturday, the Foreign Affairs Ministry urged all parties to “prioritize dialogue and restraint, and comply with international law, including the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law.”
Indonesia also emphasized the importance of protecting civilians amid the escalating situation in the South American country.
Venezuela was shaken early Saturday by U.S. military strikes on civilian and military installations, triggering explosions across multiple regions and prompting the government to declare a national emergency.
U.S. President Donald Trump later confirmed that his administration had carried out the operation, resulting in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who were subsequently taken to the United States.
The couple now faces federal charges related to drug trafficking and alleged cooperation with terrorist organizations.
Following Maduro’s capture, Venezuela’s Supreme Court appointed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as interim president for a 90-day period.
The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry also announced plans to file complaints with international organizations regarding Washington’s actions and to seek an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on January 5.
