TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Senior officials from the United States and Ukraine held talks in Geneva on Sunday to discuss a new proposal aimed at advancing peace efforts in Ukraine.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, led the U.S. delegation. The Ukrainian delegation was led by Andriy Yermak, head of the presidential office. U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll was also present in Geneva.

"Our intention is to secure the strongest possible outcome for the Ukrainians," a U.S. official told the Swiss news agency Keystone-ATS as quoted by Antara, emphasizing that the discussion is still exploratory.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the team in Switzerland is working on formulating "the steps to end the war."

In his statement on the X platform, he welcomed the return of diplomatic efforts and hoped the talks would be constructive.

"The Ukrainian and American teams, as well as the teams of our European partners, are in close contact, and I do hope that there will be a result," he said.

Zelensky emphasized the need to stop the bloodshed and ensure that "the war does not erupt again."

"I am awaiting the results of today's talks and hope that all participants will be constructive. We all need a positive outcome," he said.

Britain, France, and Germany Meet with Ukrainian Delegation

Yermak, in his post on X, also confirmed that the Ukrainian delegation began meetings in Geneva with the national security advisors of Britain, France, and Germany: Jonathan Powell, Emmanuel Bonne, and Gunther Sauter.

He said the next meetings would be held with the U.S. delegation.

"We are in a very constructive mood", he said.

"Overall, a series of meetings in various formats is planned for today. We continue working together to achieve a lasting and just peace for Ukraine," Yermak added.

It is not yet clear whether the European Union will participate in the U.S.-Ukraine meetings. All discussions are scheduled to be closed to the media.

A separate channel for dialogue with Russian representatives is expected to be opened in the next stage.

Concerns Arise over 28-Point Plan

The 28-point plan proposed by the U.S. to end the 3.5-year-long war became the main agenda for discussions in Geneva, where representatives from Washington, Kyiv, and several European capitals met to discuss its details.

President Trump stated on Saturday that the plan was not a "final offer," following concerns raised in Kyiv and its allied countries.

The draft appears to request that Ukraine cede additional territory to Russia, limit its military capabilities, and formally cancel its efforts to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Trump gave Zelensky until Thursday to respond.

Zelensky said he faced a tough choice between "losing dignity or risking losing a key partner."

On Saturday, leaders from nine European countries, as well as Japan, Canada, and high-ranking EU officials, expressed concerns over the proposed restrictions on Ukraine's armed forces.

They warned that the restrictions "would make Ukraine vulnerable to future attacks."
