TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Venezuela’s Interim President, Delcy Rodriguez, has invited the United States government to work with her nation following the U.S. military intervention that resulted in the "capture" of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife. The couple was taken to New York to face federal criminal charges.
"We invite the US government to collaborate with us on an agenda of cooperation oriented towards shared development within the framework of international law to strengthen lasting community coexistence," Rodriguez stated. Her message was posted on Instagram and quoted by Anadolu.
Rodriguez wrote that her administration prioritizes balanced international relations. She seeks a respectful bond between the United States and Venezuela, as well as with other nations in the region. She emphasized that these ties must be based on sovereignty and the principle of non-interference.
"President Donald Trump, our people and our region deserve peace and dialogue, not war. This has always been President Nicolas Maduro’s message, and it is the message of all of Venezuela right now," Rodriguez added.
Trump's Threat
Earlier on Sunday, Donald Trump was asked about Rodriguez and noted she was being cooperative. However, he also issued a stern warning. Trump stated that Rodriguez would face a situation "worse than Maduro’s" if she chose not to cooperate with U.S. demands.
"We need total access. We need access to the oil and to other things in their country that allow us to rebuild their country," Trump replied when asked what he expects from the new leader.
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, arrived in New York on Saturday night. They are currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. The U.S. federal government has charged them with drug trafficking and alleged ties to terrorist organizations.
Maduro has denied all accusations through his legal team. Meanwhile, officials in the capital city of Caracas continue to call for the immediate release of the couple, calling the capture an illegal act.
