TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 1,270 joint personnel secured a workers' alliance protest at the National Monument (Monas) area, Central Jakarta, and its surroundings today, Thursday, October 24, 2024.
Not only the police, the joint personnel also come from elements of the Indonesian National Army (TNI) and the Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP).
"In order to secure the workers’ protest, at the Monas Horse Statue roundabout, the State Palace, and its surroundings, we deploy a total of 1,270 joint personnel," said the Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Pol. Grand Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro in Jakarta, Thursday, October 24.
Susatyo said the security measures are taken to anticipate unwanted incidents during the protest and to prevent the crowd from entering the first ring area of the State Palace.
Susatyo also said traffic diversion is set in place around the Monas Horse Statue roundabout based on the situation on the ground.
"If the number of participants is small, the traffic will proceed as normal, he said, adding that the traffic will be diverted forward if the situation escalates and the crowd grows.
In addition, Susatyo reminds the deployed personnel to act persuasively, not to provoke or be provoked, prioritize negotiation, provide humane services, and maintain security and safety. Susatyo also urges field coordinators and orators to deliver speeches politely and not incite the crowd.
"Conduct a peaceful protest. Do not obtrude and behave violently and damage public property. Respect and honor other road users that pass through the Monas Horse Statue roundabout and other locations," said Susatyo.
Susatyo also mentions that deployed personnel are not armed and will respect those protesting.
A total of 14 national labor union groups are protesting 8 to 10 percent of the minimum wage increase today. They are also urging the government to revoke the Job Creation Law, especially for provisions concerning workforce clusters and farmer protection.
