The presence of e-wallet or digital wallet makes it easier for individuals to transact. However, behind its convenience, there are various security risks such as hacking.

As quoted from Antara, March 28, 2025, here are a number of tips to maintain e-wallet security:

1. Maintain Sufficient Balance

Transacting using e-wallet is indeed easier and more practical. However, this convenience can backfire on one's financial condition if not managed properly. When seeing a surplus e-wallet balance, you may feel more inclined to shop excessively.

To address this, you can limit the digital wallet balance and top up the balance according to needs. You can fill the e-wallet balance according to the shopping amount to be done. Another example is to limit the e-wallet balance every month to restrict the desire to shop using the service.

2. Routinely Update the Application to the Latest Version

To ensure the security of the e-wallet application, it is mandatory to update it regularly. With each application update, the digital wallet security system will be enhanced to better face cybercrime risks. Not updating the application will increase the risk of being hacked.

Application updates also usually include service optimization. Therefore, updates are necessary to enjoy the latest features and maximize security in every transaction.

3. Use a Unique PIN

Setting a unique PIN is mandatory to keep the digital wallet application away from hacking or unauthorized use. Avoid using easily guessable PINs, such as birth dates or home numbers. Try to set a PIN with a combination of numbers that is hard to guess and only known to you. Also, ensure that the PIN code is not too complicated so it is still easy to remember.

4. Keep PIN and OTP Code Confidential

Never tell the PIN to anyone, even if they are considered trustworthy. For account security, the PIN should only be known by the owner.

The same applies to the One Time Password (OTP) code. The OTP code is a security method that appears when logging into the digital wallet account to verify the owner. This code is the key to access the e-wallet account and is only valid for a short period of time.

Digital data theft is often carried out by asking for the OTP code from the victim. If you are careless enough to provide the OTP code to irresponsible parties, your e-wallet account can be hacked and your entire balance drained. Therefore, make sure to maintain the confidentiality of the PIN and OTP code to ensure the security of the e-wallet account.

5. Periodically Check Transaction History

Checking transaction history aims to ensure that all transactions are in line with what you have done. If there are unknown suspicious transactions, you can immediately find out. You can also report these suspicious transactions to the e-wallet application's call center to trace their source.
