AFF Cup 2024: Shin Tae-yong Announces Indonesia Team, Marselino Ferdinan and Rafael Struick Included

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia national team coach Shin Tae-yong has announced the Garuda squad that will take part in the AFF Cup 2024. The Southeast Asian tournament, dubbed the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024, will be held from December 9 to January 5, 2024.

Asnawi Mangkualam, Marselino Ferdinan, Pratama Arhan, and Rafael Struick grace the roster that will defend the Red and White team.

"The squad prepared by coach Shin Tae-yong for AMEC 2024 from December 9 to January 5, 2025," wrote the official social media page of the Indonesian national team on Friday, December 6, 2024, as quoted by Antara.

The coach, known as STY, relies mostly on young players who previously played for the U-22 team, such as Arkhan Kaka, M. Rayhan Hannan, Sulthan Zaky, and Kadek Arel.

In the 2024 AFF Cup, Marselino Ferdinan and his teammates will be drawn in Group B with Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The Garuda team will face Myanmar in their first match on Monday, December 9 at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon.

After the match against Myanmar, Shin Tae-yong's team will play a home match against Laos at Manahan Stadium in Solo on December 12.

After that, Indonesia will play away matches against Vietnam at the Phu Tho Provincial Stadium on December 15 and the final group match against the Philippines at Manahan on December 21, 2024.

Indonesia will be aiming for their first AFF Cup title. The Garuda team's best performance in the competition has been six runner-up finishes in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2010, 2016 and 2020.

Shin Tae-yong has twice led the Indonesian national team in the tournament. The first time was in 2020 when they finished as runners-up. Then in 2022, the team only reached the semi-finals.
