TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has partnered with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to provide accurate weather forecasts for tourists visiting Indonesian destinations, particularly during peak holiday seasons.

I Gusti Ayu Dewi Hendriyani, Head of the Communication Bureau of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, emphasized the importance of monitoring BMKG information channels, especially as Indonesia enters the rainy season coinciding with the Christmas and New Year holidays.

“In this weather, we collaborate with BMKG and urge people to check weather conditions through various government accounts,” she said during a tourism information socialization event in Nusa Dua, Bali, as reported by Antara on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.

Dewi confirmed that the ministry has actively followed up on this partnership with BMKG since the beginning of the month. She stopped short of detailing the specific products resulting from this collaboration but stressed that the provision of reliable weather information at tourist destinations aligns with the "Explore Indonesia Only" campaign.

BMKG currently offers a variety of channels for accessing weather forecasts, including social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook. Weather predictions and early warnings are also officially disseminated through the WhatsApp messaging application.

In August 2024, BMKG announced the development of an innovative application named "Signature" in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism. This impact-based forecast application aims to predict the specific impacts of weather conditions on various tourist spots across Indonesia.

Dwikorita Karnawati, Head of BMKG, explained that "Signature" will also provide recommendations to tourists or application users. These recommendations will vary depending on the prevailing weather conditions and potential risks. “Whether to wear warm clothes, drink plenty of water, or bring medication,” she said on August 19, 2024.

The pilot project for "Signature" is currently underway in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara. Dwikorita indicated that the official launch of the application is planned for November or December of this year, coinciding with the period of increased rainfall and the potential impacts of La Nina.

Other tourist destinations will gradually be included in the coverage area of this system. Initially, the "Signature" application will operate independently from existing BMKG weather forecast channels, but eventual integration is planned.
