TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) said they are working with several institutions to mitigate flooding by running weather modification operations.
The Head of the Data and Information Center of Jakarta BPBD, Mohamad Yohan, said on Thursday, November 14, 2024, that the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) actively conduct weather modification operations to “reduce rainfall intensity that can trigger flooding.”
According to Yohan, weather modification is also carried out in flood-prone regions near Jakarta, such as Bogor and Depok. By seeding certain chemicals into the clouds, BMKG attempts to divert or reduce rainfall in these regions.
Yohan mentioned that the Jakarta government continues to monitor weather conditions and coordinate with BMKG for up-to-date information on rainfall potential.
"This helps in planning and implementing weather modification operations effectively," he said.
Through this collaboration, Yohan said the Jakarta government hopes to minimize the risks of hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods and landslides, which often occur due to torrential downpours.
"Through these measures, the Jakarta Government, together with BMKG and BNPB, strives to enhance preparedness and mitigation against the potential flooding that can disrupt the lives of residents in flood-prone areas," he said.
According to Yohan, BPBD has also coordinated with mayors, regents, the Department of Water Resources, the Fire and Rescue Department, as well as other stakeholders to ensure the preparedness of personnel and equipment in facing hydrometeorological disaster threats.
BPBD also deploys a total of 267 personnel to mitigate potential flooding in Jakarta and inspect necessary facilities and infrastructure.
