TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, announced that the government is implementing weather modification operations to mitigate the risk of heavy rainfall during the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year holiday season in the Greater Jakarta or Jabodetabek region. This measure aims to preempt potential flood disasters during this period.
“Weather modification initiatives will be undertaken by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in collaboration with provincial governments. These efforts will focus on reducing rainfall intensity, thereby alleviating pressure on water infrastructure within the Jabodetabek region,” Pratikno said after a coordination meeting convened to address potential flooding risks in the Jabodetabek region at his office on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
He emphasized that the government will optimize, leverage, and enhance existing disaster infrastructure. Concurrently, the government will prioritize the professional development of field officers. “We must ensure that technical officers remain vigilant and prepared. We will conduct alert drills regularly,” Pratikno added.
The government will also establish a dedicated coordination post involving representatives from relevant ministries, agencies, regional governments, and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). This centralized post will serve as a real-time monitoring hub. “So real-time coordination will be facilitated directly through this post,” he explained.
Pratikno underscored that these measures are designed to minimize the impact of potential flood disasters. Even in the event of flooding, the government is well-prepared with a range of pre-emptive actions already in place. “The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) is positioned at several locations, and necessary infrastructure has been prepared,” he noted.
The BMKG had previously issued an early warning of extreme weather conditions, forecasting a 20 percent increase in rainfall across several regions during the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year period.
