TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that as of Monday, December 2, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens affected by the recent flash floods in Malaysia. The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is closely monitoring the situation in the flood-affected Kelantan region.
“The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur continues to communicate and coordinate with local authorities and Indonesian citizens in the region,” said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Embassy has urged Indonesian citizens to remain vigilant and to report any issues or concerns to the Embassy hotline at +60 17-668 8032.
In March 2023, Malaysia experienced severe flash floods, with Johor being the hardest-hit state, recording over 44,800 displaced individuals. The southern state was inundated by several days of heavy rainfall, marking the highest four-day rainfall total since 1991.
The Hot Springs station in Segamat town recorded 731mm of rainfall between February 28 and March 3, 2023. This figure surpasses the previous monthly rainfall records of 621mm in December 1991 and 599mm in December 2006.
Dr. Md Nasir Md Noh, Director General of the Irrigation and Drainage Department, noted that the rainfall exceeded the average monthly rainfall for March in Johor, which is typically 195mm.
Nearly 3,000 people were evacuated in the neighboring state of Pahang, while Melaka, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan reported approximately 1,100 displaced individuals. Tragically, at least four people lost their lives, including a man whose car was swept away by floodwaters and an elderly couple who drowned.
Malaysia's Health Ministry announced plans to monitor for potential waterborne diseases, such as leptospirosis and food poisoning, in the aftermath of the floods.
“We will also deploy teams to assist with cleanup efforts, particularly in health facilities affected by the disaster,” stated Health Minister Dr. Zaliha Mustafa.
