TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Human Rights has strongly condemned the shooting incident involving five Indonesian migrant workers by Malaysian coast guard officers in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, Malaysia, on Friday, January 24, 2025.

“The action does not respect the values and principles of human rights,” stated Munafrizal Manan, Director General of Human Rights Services and Compliance, in an official statement on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. He emphasized that the shooting was inhumane and a clear violation of human rights.

The Indonesian government has urged Malaysian law enforcement authorities to promptly investigate the incident and take legal action against the officers involved, as well as ensuring transparency and impartiality throughout the process.

Furthermore, the government encourages the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) to communicate and coordinate with the Malaysian Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) given the existing Memorandum of Understanding in the field of human rights between the two institutions.

The government has also requested Komnas HAM to immediately discuss this incident within the Southeast Asia National Human Rights Institution Forum (SEANF).

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is still working to confirm the identities of the five Indonesian citizens who were victims of the shooting. “Only 1 brought a passport,” said Judha Nugraha, Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens, in a message to Tempo on Monday, January 27, 2025.

The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is actively investigating the origins of the victims. The Indonesian government has already sent a diplomatic note to Malaysia urging a thorough investigation into the incident, including an examination of the possibility of excessive use of force. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy are also actively seeking consular access to visit the bodies of the deceased and meet with the injured victims.
