Industry Minister to Prioritize Shifting Import Entry Points to Eastern Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said his ministry had crafted a quick wins program to accelerate national economic growth, namely transferring the import entry points of several commodities to eastern Indonesia.

Said commodities include electronics, textiles and textile products (TPT), ready-to-wear clothing, footwear, cosmetics, ceramics, valves, and traditional medicine.

According to him, the entry points are transferred to protect domestic manufacturing industries. "The selection of these commodities is not without reason, considering these industrial sectors are vulnerable to the influx of cheap or illegally imported goods," said the Golkar Party politician in a written statement quoted on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

Agus Gumiwang has identified the regions that will become new import entry points: Sorong, Bitung, and Kupang.

Moving the import entry points to these regions will be the focus of Pranowo’s Red and White Cabinet policies, he said.

Meanwhile, the Association of Indonesian Retailers and Shopping Center Tenants (Hippindo) believes that the government's plan to move the entry points for the import of seven commodities to Eastern Indonesia will trigger a price hike due to inadequate transportation and logistics infrastructure.

"High operational costs, including transportation and distribution, will result in rising prices in the market," said the Chair of Hippindo, Budihardjo Iduansjah, in a written statement on Thursday, September 5.

Agus Gumiwang and former Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan previously proposed transferring import entry points for seven commodities to ports outside of Java Island to restrict the number of imported products that flood the Indonesian markets.
