Israeli military has once again expanded its operation in Gaza City to take control of the last remaining population center in the Gaza Strip. According to New Arab, the air and artillery attacks by Israel have intensified since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the occupation of Gaza would commence in the city.
According to Al Jazeera, areas such as Zeitoun, Sabra, Remal, and Tuffah have been the main targets in the past few days. Thousands of families have fled Zeitoun after relentless attacks destroyed settlements.
On Sunday, August 17, Israeli air strikes even hit the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, killing at least seven people.
Civilian Casualties and Aid Crisis
The attacks also targeted aid distribution locations. On Saturday morning, at least two civilians were killed near Rafah while queuing for aid. The day before, 16 people were killed at a distribution site managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) with the support of Israel and the United States.
Israel's attacks on the same day killed another eight civilians in central and southern Gaza, including four children at the Bureij refugee camp. The UNHCR has recorded 1,760 Palestinian fatalities since late May while waiting for aid after GHF began operating.
A Gaza fisherman was also shot dead by Israel on Saturday, while another was injured. The previous day, a child was reported to have died from starvation. The total number of malnutrition victims has now reached 240, including 107 children.
International Condemnation of Israel
Currently, about 31 Arab and Islamic countries, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Gulf Cooperation Council have condemned Netanyahu's statement regarding the formation of "Greater Israel". They have called the plan a violation of international law and dangerously provocative.
Ten Nobel laureates, including economists Edmund S. Phelps, Christopher A. Pissarides, and Joseph E. Stiglitz, have also sent a letter to Netanyahu. They have highlighted the forced starvation experienced in Gaza and urged Israel to open unimpeded access to aid.
Israeli media reported that international mediators have also intensified negotiations in Cairo. However, a source from Israel stated that the government does not have high hopes for these efforts.
