TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta government has initiated another round of weather modification efforts, running from February 14 until 21. Fikri Nur Muhammad, Deputy Supervisor of Weather Modification at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), explained that cloud growth in western Java, including Jakarta, has exceeded 70 percent. This pattern is typical for the second half of February.
"The potential for rain cloud growth in Banten, Jakarta, and West Java, in general, is high," he said in a written statement on Friday, February 14, 2025.
Weather modification is deemed necessary due to Jakarta's high humidity levels, reaching 90 percent. A joint team, including the BMKG, conducted a similar operation earlier this month, from February 1 to 6.
Michael Sitanggang, Head of the Logistics and Equipment Sub-Group of the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), reported that his team will disperse 1,600 kilograms of salt (NaCl) daily over the city. This involves two flights per day.
The weather modification team will initially target the skies around the Sunda Strait and the northwest of Jakarta, then shift focus to the southwest.
"These are efforts to respond to the potential extreme weather predicted for that period (February 14-21, 2025)," Michael explained.
According to the BMKG's analysis for the second half of February 2025, moderate rain is forecast for much of Sumatra, Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, West Papua, and Papua.
Areas with the potential for heavy to very heavy rain include parts of southern Banten, parts of West Java, parts of Central Java and northern East Java, and some areas in East Nusa Tenggara. Similar conditions are also possible in parts of Gorontalo, South Sulawesi, North Maluku, and western Papua.
