TEMPO.CO, Batam - Kuwait-flagged crude oil tanker Al Derwazah reported an attack by pirates in Batam waters, Riau Islands, early Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
The Director of Air and Marine Police of Riau Islands Regional Police, Commissioner Trisno Eko Santoso, stated that Batam Vessel Traffic reported the initial information of the incident at around 01:30 a.m. local time The police immediately followed up on the report.
Officers of the Directorate of Air and Marine Police headed to the reported coordinate, 113.745' N, 10358.855' E, on a KP XXXI-1007 patrol vessel. "Upon arrival, the AL Derwazah mega tanker was still sailing and did not come to a halt," said Trisno on Thursday, October 24.
When officers came aboard the sailing vessel, the reported pirates were no longer on board. The Kuwait-flagged tanker is known to be transporting crude oil from the Middle East to China.
Based on the ship captain's statement, a perpetrator attacked the ship’s chief engineer while in the engine room. "He claimed to have been tied up, restrained, and lost personal items such as a phone, watch, wallet, and a necklace," he said.
However, upon inspection, there were no signs of piracy aboard the vessel. "Furthermore, the ship's captain refused to halt the sail or file an official report," he added.
