TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the southwest region of the Vanuatu Islands in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at 08:47 Jakarta time (WIB). The epicenter of the quake was located at 17.63 degrees South Latitude and 167.90 degrees East Longitude, approximately 47 kilometers southwest of Port Vila, Vanuatu, with a hypocenter depth of 50 kilometers.
Daryono, Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), stated in a written statement on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, that the quake was a shallow event triggered by subduction activity, specifically the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath the Pacific Plate at a rate of 92 millimeters per year. The earthquake's mechanism involved an upward movement with a combination of oblique thrust faulting within the Vanuatu Trench.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Hawaii reported that the earthquake generated a local tsunami with a height of 0.25 meters at the Port-Vila Tide Gauge at 09:07 WIB, a height of 0.19 meters at the Lennakel Tide Gauge at 09:23 WIB, and a height of 0.13 meters at the Luganville Tide Gauge at 09:27 WIB.
However, Daryono emphasized that the BMKG analysis indicated no tsunami threat to the Indonesian region. “The earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat to Indonesia,” he stated while urging coastal communities in Indonesia to remain calm.
