TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 4.2 earthquake shook the Garut area and its surroundings on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 07:12 a.m., the Meteorology Climatology Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.
The head of BMKG Region II South Tangerang, Hartanto, said that according to the BMKG shaking level map and based on reports from the community, the tremors were felt in the areas of Pasirwangi, Samarang, Bayongbong, with an intensity scale of IV MMI.
The earthquake was felt by many people inside the houses and some people outside, to the point of breaking pottery, creaking windows and doors, and rumbling walls. Meanwhile, in Malayu, Garut, the tremor was felt with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI.
In addition, the tremor was felt spreading to Bandung District areas such as Majalaya, Pacet, and Ciparay with an intensity scale of III MMI. Vibrations were felt inside houses as if a truck was passing by.
In Cimahi, Baleendah, Cibiru, Cicalengka, Kopo, Soreang, and Sumedang, the earthquake was recorded to be at level III-II of the MMI scale, which could be felt by only a few people and made light hanging objects swing. According to the BMKG, there have been no reports of damage to buildings due to the earthquake.
The source of the 4.2 magnitude earthquake was on land, located 19 kilometers southwest of the center of Garut District. The coordinates are 7.24 degrees south latitude and 107.72 degrees east longitude.
The earthquake is classified as shallow at a depth of 5 kilometers. "Earthquake due to active fault activity," he said. As of 07:41 a.m., there were no aftershock earthquake activities. BMKG urges residents to remain calm and not to be influenced by unverifiable rumors.
