Majority of Indonesians in Syria Are Undocumented Migrant Workers, Foreign Ministry Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the majority of Indonesians in Syria entered the country through unofficial channels as illegal migrant workers. Most of them work as domestic helpers.

The Director of Citizen Protection at the Foreign Ministry, Judha Nugraha, explained during a press conference on Monday that these workers did not leave for Syria through legal procedures. As a country closed off for the placement of migrant workers in the domestic sector, access to the personal data of Indonesians living in Syria is limited.

These undocumented workers are not registered in the database of the Ministry of Manpower or the Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection Agency. Therefore, Judha hopes citizens will report to the government about their family members living in Syria.

Judha also stressed that the Foreign Ministry has reached out and held a virtual meeting with accessible Indonesians in Syria. Syrian immigration data of 1,162 Indonesian citizens living in the country, he said, is inaccurate and outdated.

"Hence, our efforts to update the data. Some have returned [to Indonesia], while some were contacted but did not answer the phone,” he said.

Judha urged Indonesians in Syria to contact the Indonesian Embassy in Damascus. Meanwhile, the Embassy advised all Indonesians in Syria to remain calm, stay at home, and stay connected with the Indonesian Embassy in Damascus. In case of emergency, people are directed to Embassy hotelines at (+963) 954 444 810, (+963) 983 493 426, and (+963) 983 480 264.

Based on the Al Jazeera report, on Sunday, December 8, 2024, the opposition forces declared Syria liberated from Bashar al-Assad's rule when opposition forces stormed the capital. The former president of Syria was reported to have fled Damascus and sought refuge in Russia.

The collapse of the Assad family's rule, which lasted for more than 53 years, has been described as a historic moment, almost 14 years after Syrians protested peacefully against the government, which retaliated with violence and quickly turned into a civil war.
