TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid stated that an artificial intelligence (AI) Center will be established in Jayapura, Papua, at the beginning of 2025. She conveyed this information while giving a speech at the Indonesia AI Day 2024 event.
Meutya said she obtained the information during a conversation with the CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, Vikram Sinha. "We will have an AI Center in Jayapua, Papua, by January or February,” she said on Thursday, November 14, 2024, referring to Vikram’s target.
Establishing the AI Center is part of the efforts to support the national AI ecosystem. After the event, Meutya mentioned that the commitment to build AI centers extends to several locations, including in Eastern Indonesia. She also alluded to the ongoing cooperation in Solo, Central Java.
"The Ministry of Communication and Digital pushes for the AI center construction to spread outside of Java, and there is a commitment to build one in Jayapura soon,” stated Meutya.
In principle, according to Meutya, artificial intelligence is not a distant future, and Indonesia needs to prepare for it.
She mentioned that young Indonesians should be able to properly utilize AI in order to optimally benefit from the technology. Meutya stressed the importance of upholding principles of justice as directed by President Prabowo.
