Mount Ibu spews volcanic ash as seen from Gam Ici Village, West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku, Indonesia, on Monday, May 13, 2024. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) recorded the eruption activities that produced ash column as high as five kilometers from the top of Mount Ibu on Wednesday (13/5) at 09:12 WIT (Eastern Indonesian Time) with a thick intensity leaning towards the west with a maximum amplitude of 28 mm and a duration of 5 minutes 6 seconds. TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has raised the activity status of North Maluku volcano, Mount Ibu, to level IV or awas.

"Based on the results of visual and instrumental monitoring, which show an increase in volcanic activity on Mount Ibu, the level of Mount Ibu's activity has been raised from Level III (Siaga) to Level IV (Awas) from January 15, 2025, at 10:00 local time," said Geological Agency Head Muhammad Wafid in his statement, Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

Therefore, the public is asked not to carry out activities within a radius of 5 kilometers from the active crater of Mount Ibu and within a sectoral distance of 6 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of the crater.

"Residents who are outside the 5-kilometer radius and outside the 6-kilometer sectoral distance must increase their vigilance by continuing to follow the instructions of the local government," he said.

Wafid reminded people who engage in outdoor activities to wear masks and glasses to protect their respiratory tract and eyes in case of ash rain at any time. Residents are also asked to be aware of the potential for lava in rivers that originate at the summit of Mount Ibu, especially if there is heavy rain at the summit.

The results of the Geological Agency's assessment showed a trend of increased activity from visual and instrumental observations of Mount Ibu. Since January 1-15, 2025, there have been 5 eruptions with column heights that tend to be higher and larger than usual, reaching 3,000 meters. The eruption with the highest ash column, reaching 4,000 meters from the summit, was recorded on January 1, 2025, at 19:58 local time and on January 15, 2024, at 07:11 local time.

Instrumental observations have also found evidence of swelling in the body of Mount Ibu. Data from an instrument that records changes in the body of the mountain showed swelling that is guesstimated to be caused by fluid pressure from the depths. "The deformation data showed inflation, which indicated swelling in the body of the volcano due to fluid pressure from the depths," Wafid said.

The Geological Agency noticed a tendency for eruptions with column heights that tended to be higher than usual. From January 1 to 15, the Geological Agency recorded 5 eruptions at Mount Ibu with eruption columns that tended to be higher and larger than usual.

The last eruption was recorded on January 15, 2025, at 07:11 local time. The eruption produced an ash column 4,000 meters high from the summit, or about 5,325 meters above sea level. The eruption column was observed to be gray, dense, and westward inclined. It was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters for 2 minutes and 11 seconds. The eruption produced a booming and rumbling sound that could be heard as far as the Mount Ibu Volcano Observation Post (PGA). The eruption produced a hot cloud with a sliding distance of 500 meters to the north of the crater opening.

The Geological Agency had previously raised the status of Mount Ibu to Level III on June 21, 2024. At that time, the eruptive activity averaged about 70 incidents per day.
