TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Center for Volcanology, Mitigation, and Geological Disaster (PVMBG) discourages tourists from hiking Mount Semeru, as eruptions continue to occur for Java Island’s highest volcano until Thursday, December 12, 2024.
The Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA) in Lumajang reported that an eruption occurred on the mountain with an altitude of 3,676 meters above sea level on Thursday morning at around 4:09 a.m. local time.
Mount Semeru’s Alert Level Status
Mount Semeru remains at Alert Level II, thereby causing PVMBG to deter activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the crater.
PVMBG also asked tourists and residents alike to avoid doing activities within 8 kilometers of the crater, along the southeastern sector of Besuk Kobokan.
Beyond this distance, people are asked not to carry out activities at a distance of 500 meters from the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan due to the risk of hot clouds and lava flows up to 13 kilometers from the crater.
People are warned about hot clouds and lava flows along the rivers originating from the Semeru crater, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat.
Hiking Trails Possibly Reopen in Second Week of December
Based on information compiled by TEMPO, hiking to Mount Semeru’s summit is likely to reopen in the second week of December 2024, albeit limited to Ranu Kumbolo.
“The information [received] is the hiking is only going to be reopened to Ranu Kumbolo,” said Yuli Harismawati, head of the Lumajang district tourism office, when contacted by TEMPO on Thursday morning, December 12, 2024.
The reopening of Mount Semeru’s hiking trails also awaiting permission from the Director General of Natural Resources and Conservation (KSDAE) at the Ministry of Forestry.
In similar veins, the head of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority, Septi Eka Wardhani, said permissions must be obtained before the hiking trails can be reopened
Permission for Hiking Activities
Director General of KSDAE Satyawan Pudyatmoko told TEMPO on Thursday morning that several considerations must be taken into account before issuing a permit for hiking activities on Mount Semeru.
Some of these things include recommendations from the PVMBG, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the military and National Police, and local governments. The KSDAE also considers the feasibility of hiking trails.
“We last checked with the relevant parties last Saturday,” Satyawan added. “In addition, the matter of management preparedness (quotas and SOP applications, the necessity for guides, and the readiness of the evacuation team) is also taken into consideration,” he said.
Reopening the Hiking Activities on Mount Semeru
To prepare for the opening of the Mount Semeru hiking trails, the national park authority carried out several measures, including holding coordination meetings with the relevant parties.
“We are aiming for zero accidents and zero waste,” said Septi, referring to the resuming of hiking activities on Mount Semeru.
Authorities have also prepared officers and improved hiking support facilities such as maintaining the Semeru online booking website, cleaning the hiking trails, and other supporting facilities such as toilets in Ranu Kumbolo.
The national park authority has also conducted a study related to the new fare for hiking activities on Mount Semeru so that when tourists resume their hike on Mount Semeru, they can do so safely and securely while preserving nature.
