Volcanic smoke coming out of the crater of Mount Semeru is seen from Supiturang Village, Lumajang, East Java, Thursday, October 17, 2024. Based on data from the Geological Disaster Mitigation Volcanology Center (PVMBG) during the observation period Wednesday (16/10) at 00:00-24:00 WIB Mount Semeru experienced volcanic activity 16 times the eruption was observed with a smoke height of 300-800 meters in gray-white color, one cluster was observed with a glide distance of 1500 meters towards Besuk Kobokan, 55 eruption earthquakes or eruptions with an amplitude of 10-22 mm for 50-177 seconds, and 13 cluster earthquakes with an amplitude of 3-12 mm for 45-136 seconds. TEMPO.CO, JakartaMount Semeru in East Java reportedly erupted again on Tuesday morning, December 17, 2024, at 06:09 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). The eruption column was observed to be approximately 1,000 meters above the peak. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 135 seconds.

Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA) Officer, Mukdas Sofian, in his report on Tuesday morning stated that the height of the eruption column reached 4,676 meters above sea level. The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northeast.

Since early Tuesday morning, two consecutive eruptions have been reported at 00:41 WIB and 05:10 WIB.

The Semeru PGA Post located on Mount Sawit, Sumber Wuluh Village, Candipuro District, Lumajang Regency also reported observations in the last 24 hours regarding the volcanic activity of the highest volcano on the island of Java.

Until Tuesday morning, the seismograph of the Mount Semeru observation post recorded at least 62 eruption earthquakes with an amplitude of 10-22 mm, and an earthquake duration of 70-180 seconds.

Then there were 2 avalanche earthquakes with an amplitude of 3 mm and an earthquake duration of 49-58 seconds. The Hembusan earthquake was recorded 9 times with an amplitude of 3-8 mm, and an earthquake duration of 47-95 seconds.

Also recorded was 1 harmonic with an amplitude of 6 mm, and an earthquake duration of 68 seconds. Distant Tectonic Earthquakes were also recorded 4 times with an amplitude of 10-14 mm, S-P 14-43 seconds and an earthquake duration of 30-102 seconds.

The activity level of Mount Semeru until Tuesday morning is still at Level II (Alert). At this level, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) issued a number of recommendations. Among other things, the public is asked not to carry out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 8 km from the peak (center of the eruption).

Outside this distance, the public is asked not to carry out activities within a distance of 500 meters from the river bank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan because it has the potential to be hit by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 13 km from the peak.

PVMBG also asked the public not to carry out activities within a radius of 3 km from the crater/peak of Mount Semeru because it is prone to the danger of ejected rocks (incandescent).

The public is also asked to be aware of the potential for avalanches of hot clouds and lava along rivers or valleys that originate at the peak of Mount Semeru, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat as well as the potential for lava in small rivers that are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
