NFL running back Matt Breida will reportedly retire from the NFL after he rejected a workout request from the injury-riddled Miami Dolphins, who were hoping to sure up their backfield.

Breida played for seven seasons in the NFL, most recently with the San Francisco 49ers, where he took part in their training camp before being released and unclaimed by another franchise.

The 30-year-old tailback had his best NFL season in his first stint with the 49ers when he had 1,075 total yards and five touchdowns in 14 games.

Breida ends his career  with 2,652 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in 98 career games, deciding to hang up his cleats this week, per ESPN.

Breida also played for the Miami Dolphins in 2020, which was his second team after leaving the 49ers in 2019.

After a year with the Buffalo Bills, Breida played for the New York Giants for two seasons in his last official NFL action.

Breida went undrafted in 2017 after four years at Georgia Southern, finding his footing in the NFL despite the setback.

The tailback also finished his career with 935 receiving yards and six touchdowns through the air.

The need for Breida to come in and try out for the Dolphins came after Alexander Mattison suffered a season-ending neck injury last weekend against the Chicago Bears.

Also hoping to make a roster spot for the Dolphins are Mike Boone, Jamaal Williams, and Aaron Shampklin.

Miami already has De'Von Achane, Jaylen Wright, and rookie Ollie Gordon II on its roster, with the former Oklahoma State standout with the most to gain from the void created by Mattison's injury.
