Persistent Rainfall to Wet Greater Jakarta Today, BRIN Researcher Warns of Floods

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A research scientist from the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Erma Yulihastin, said rainfall will persist today, Tuesday, August 19, 2025, in Greater Jakarta (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi). The wet weather will also affect other areas on Java Island.

"(Rain) will be persistent due to vortex, rising sea temperature, and convergence," Erma wrote on her social media X today. Tempo has been given permission to quote her post.

In the post, satellite imagery showed that rain has poured over South Sumatra, Lampung, northern Banten, Jakarta, Cirebon, Banjar, and even Yogyakarta.

The wind vortex is located in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra, the Bay of Bengal, and the South China Sea. Erma warned of the potential disasters due to the rainfall this morning. "Beware of floods," she wrote.

According to the forecast by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Jakarta and its surrounding areas will potentially experience light to moderate rain today and over the next week. Strong winds should also be anticipated.

This is influenced by the value of the -0.84 Dipole Mode, which boosts the supply of water vapor in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra. Then there is the Madden-Julian Oscillation phenomenon in phase 3, which will move into phase 4 and affect the increased potential for rain.

The combination of Kelvin waves, mixed Rossby-gravity, and low-frequency waves actively contributes to the process of rain cloud formation. The cyclonic circulation in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra triggers wind convergence and causes wind deceleration that supports the growth of rain clouds.

"This still active and complex atmospheric condition has the potential to cause extreme weather, such as moderate to heavy rainfall, strong winds, and high sea waves," BMKG wrote on their Instagram social media.
