TEMPO.CO, JakartaPT PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP), a subsidiary of state-owned electricity company PLN, is ready to develop a 50-megawatt floating solar power plant (PLTS) in Lake Singkarak, Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra. PLN Indonesia Power President Director, Edwin Nugraha Putra, said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday that his company will fully support the government's energy transition program.

PLN IP has formed a strategic partnership with ACWA Power from Saudi Arabia to develop the 50-megawatt Singkarak Floating PLTS. “We are moving forward quickly with the construction of the Singkarak PLTS. This project is part of the 'Hijaunesia' program, launched in 2020 to accelerate the adoption of new and renewable energy in Indonesia and support the goal of net-zero emissions by 2060. It also aligns with PLN's government-mandated task to build numerous PLTS across Indonesia,” he said as cited by Antara.

Edwin emphasized that PLN IP requires full support from all stakeholders, including the people of Tanah Datar Regency. He explained that the floating power plant in Lake Singkarak will become the largest PLTS in Sumatra.

The development of renewable energy sources (EBT) is also outlined in the 2021-2030 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). “For example, the 50-megawatt AC or 76-megawatt peak capacity of the Singkarak PLTS can power 40,000 homes with green electricity and integrate into the West Sumatra electricity grid,” he added.

The development of the Singkarak PLTS provides a reliable technological solution for achieving a 23% energy mix. According to him, the Singkarak PLTS is expected to significantly contribute to reducing carbon emissions, increasing energy efficiency, and creating a greener and more sustainable energy future.

The Singkarak PLTS project, scheduled for commercial operation in 2027, will utilize 49 hectares, or 0.45% of Lake Singkarak's total area of 10,780 hectares, to maintain the lake's environmental balance and ecosystem function.

“The development covers several districts in Tanah Datar Regency – Batipuh Selatan, Batipuh, and X Koto – with management designed to maximize benefits for local communities,” Edwin concluded.
