TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, Richard Marles MP, will visit Jakarta over the weekend to represent Australia at the inauguration of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka on Sunday, October 20, 2024.
Indonesia is one of Australia's closest partners, and this year marks the 75th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations. Australia looks forward to working with the incoming president and his cabinet to deepen cooperation between the two countries.
"There is no relationship more important to Australia than our relationship with Indonesia. Our two countries are working closely together in shaping a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region that is respectful of sovereignty," said Marles in a statement quoted on Saturday, October 19.
Australia, he said, hopes to work closely with the new government on “shared economic, security, and human development priorities.”
Prior to this, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Marles welcomed President-elect Prabowo’s visit in August 2024. The visit underscores the importance of the relationship between Indonesia and Australia.
The Australian Government, its embassy said in a statement, thanked the outgoing President Joko Widodo and his administration for the strengthened bilateral ties between Indonesia and Australia.
Key milestones include the elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018, the entry into force of the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in 2020, and the signing of the Defense Cooperation Agreement in August 2024.
