TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia strives to join a number of economic groups to seize optimal prospects for the country. Thus, Prabowo claims Indonesia’s pledge to join BRICS is not an issue amid U.S. Joe Biden’s endorsement to join the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
"I don't think there is a problem," said Prabowo in a press release after meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Defense in Washington DC, November 13, 2024, quoted from the President's Secretariat YouTube.
“We must consider the welfare of our people, no?” he remarked.
Prabowo said Indonesia also joined the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and has applied to become a member of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
According to Prabowo, this step is taken to uncover the best opportunities for the Indonesian economy.
Previously, Indonesia did express its wish to join the BRICS economic bloc, a group of developing countries comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as conveyed by Foreign Minister Sugiono on October 4 in Kazan, Russia.
"Indonesia joining BRICS is a manifestation of its independent-active foreign policy. That does not mean we join a certain bloc, but we actively participate in every forum," said Sugiono.
Sugiono added BRICS suits Prabowo's main government programs "especially with regards to food and energy security, poverty eradication, and the advancement of human resources." Through BRICS, Indonesia will further the interests of the global south, he said
Meanwhile, during Prabowo's working visit to the United States, President Joe Biden expressed support for Indonesia to accelerate its application for OECD membership. Citing Antara, the support is stated in a joint statement issued by Joe Biden and Prabowo at the White House on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, local time.
