TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, is meeting President Prabowo Subianto at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor Regency, West Java, this afternoon, August 19, 2025. The minister was asked to prepare several materials on the economic situation in several regions, albeit the specifics were not disclosed.
"There are several, but I cannot mention them here," he said when delivering a speech at a seminar held by the Ministry of Home Affairs monitored via YouTube, Jakarta, Tuesday, August 19, 2025.
Tito previously mentioned that his ministry plays a role in controlling inflation in the regions. Since September 2022, Tito said the Ministry of Home Affairs has conducted weekly monitoring for the economic developments in the regions. The prices in each region are observed from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data and reports from the Regional Inflation Control Team (KSP).
The ministry will first sort through regions with high commodity prices, then intervene through Bulog, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Trade to maintain economic growth.
If the intervention fails, Tito will deploy a team to check prices and investigate the reasons behind price hikes while seeking solutions that prioritize local approaches.
"The team will identify the underlying issues. Then, implement a local solution," he said.
The former National Police Chief mentioned that based on the economic growth figures, each region has different growth rates. Some have seen a 30 percent growth, while others dropped 9 percent.
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya Sugiarto previously mentioned that Tito would attend a meeting in Hambalang this afternoon. "(Tito will attend), yes, possibly in the afternoon," he said via a WhatsApp message, Tuesday, August 19.
The agenda of the closed-door meeting is not yet known. Meanwhile, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya have not responded to Tempo's inquiries sent via WhatsApp.
Tito's summons comes amidst the issue of tax rate hikes of Rural and Urban Land and Building Tax (PBB-P2) in several regions, which also led to the demands for Pati Regent Sudewo to resign.
Tito had previously admitted to reprimanding Regent Sudewo for raising PBB-P2 rates by up to 250 percent. "I immediately called the Regent, the Governor. I asked why the mechanism was that way," said Tito Karnavian in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
The Executive Director of the Paramadina Public Policy Institute, Ahmad Khoirul Umam, considers the tax hike phenomenon in several regions as indicative of a tendency towards fiscal 'shortcuts.' "This policy actually reflects shallow and pragmatic thinking," he said in an official statement on Thursday.
