TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is reported to meet with Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) leader Megawati Soekarnoputri on Thursday, January 23, 2025. Prabowo's spokesman, Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak, did not comment much when asked for confirmation.
"Let's see tomorrow," Dahnil said in a short message on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
Gerindra Chief Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said President Prabowo would leave for India tomorrow morning.
Tempo's source said the meeting between Prabowo and Megawati tomorrow will take place before the head of state leaves for a working visit to India. Tomorrow is also known as Megawati's birthday.
Three PDIP politicians said PDIP Central Leadership Council Chair Puan Maharani was directly involved in arranging Megawati's direct communication with Prabowo. Gerindra and PDIP officials then became the door of communication between the two.
Tempo was unable to reach Puan for confirmation. Questions submitted through Puan's communications staff were not returned. PDIP spokesman Guntur Romli said Prabowo and Megawati could meet tomorrow. "Mbak Puan has already said it's possible. She knows more about the meeting plan," Guntur said on Wednesday.
Earlier, Puan said her mother's birthday celebration was limited. She said this year's celebration was planned to invite only several Megawati's extended family members. Still, Puan was reluctant to explain the meeting between Prabowo and Megawati during the PDIP chair's birthday celebration.
Puan said the meeting would take place as soon as possible. "We all have the same hope and I'm sure both of them must have the same hope to meet as soon as possible," she said after opening the DPR session at the Parliament Complex in Senayan on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
Of the eight factions in the DPR, the PDIP is the only party that has not expressed support for Prabowo's government. The PDIP politician has repeatedly emphasized that the PDIP will not become Prabowo's opposition and will continue to serve as a check and balance. The meeting between Prabowo and Megawati opened the door for the PDIP to cooperate with the government on strategic programs and support in parliament.
