TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Saudi Arabia strongly condemns the call of right-wing Finance Minister of Israel Bezalel Smotrich to annex Palestine’s occupied West Bank.
In a statement quoted from the Saudi Gazette, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned that Smotrich's call undermines peace efforts, including the two-state solution, encourages war, produces more extremism, and threatens security and stability in the region.
"These statements constitute a flagrant violation of international laws and relevant UN resolutions and perpetuate the occupation and expansion of the seizure of lands by force, which constitutes a dangerous precedent," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The consequences of continued international failure, according to Saudi Arabia, go beyond crisis and affect the legitimacy and credibility of the international system.
In addition to Saudi Arabia, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs described Smotrich's call as a flagrant breach of international law and relevant UN resolutions and a blatant violation of the Palestinian people's right to an independent state.
As quoted from Anadolu, Kuwait warned that the statement of the Israeli minister would further complicate the regional situation. Smotrich's statement is also a stumbling block to international peace efforts aimed at achieving regional and global peace and stability.
On Monday, Smotrich stated that he instructed the Israeli Settlement Division and Civil Administration to initiate the groundwork for infrastructure to “apply sovereignty” in the West Bank, sparking condemnation worldwide.
In June this year, Smotrich confirmed reports from The New York Times that he had a "secret plan" to annex the West Bank and thwart all efforts to incorporate the territory into a future Palestinian state.
The following month, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a landmark opinion declaring Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land as illegal. The ICJ demanded the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
According to Israel's public broadcaster KAN on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to reintroduce the annexation of the West Bank into his government's agenda when U.S. President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
In 2020, Netanyahu planned to "annex" illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank and the Jordan Valley, based on what was called the Middle East peace plan announced by Trump in January of the same year.
The area Netanyahu planned to annex at the time encompassed around 30 percent of the West Bank territory. However, his plan was not launched due to international pressure and a lack of U.S. approval.
