TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coach of the Indonesian national team, Shin Tae-yong, stated that his target at the ASEAN Cup 2024 (2024 AFF Cup) is to provide experience to the young players he brought along.
Out of the 24 players from the Indonesian National Team he brought to this tournament, the Garuda squad is only decorated by eight players who have caps in the senior national team, while the rest are debutant senior players.
Those eight players are Muhammad Ferrari, Pratama Arhan, Asnawi Mangkualam, Arkhan Fikri, Marselino Ferdinan, Rafael Struick, Ronaldo Kwateh, and Hokky Caraka.
"The tournament's target is to provide experience to the young players, and I believe they will give their best in every match," said the South Korean coach at a press conference on Sunday.
Playing minutes in the ASEAN Cup, Shin said, will be very beneficial for his young players who are being prepared for more prestigious tournaments in the future, such as the SEA Games 2025 in Thailand and the qualification for the 2026 AFC U-23 Championship.
"We come here as preparation for the qualification of the 2026 AFC U-23 Championship and the 2025 SEA Games," he explained.
Despite being fueled by youthful spirit, Shin remains confident in leading Indonesia's journey at least to the final like he did in the 2020 edition.
"With that, step by step we will surely be able to reach the final," concluded the Yeongdeok-born coach.
In the 2024 ASEAN Cup, Indonesia is placed in Group B alongside Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, and the Philippines. They will play their first match today against the host Myanmar at Thuwunna Stadium, Yangon, Monday at 19:30 WIB.
Indonesia's best achievement in this tournament is being the runner-up six times, in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2010, 2016, and 2020.
