TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno announced on Monday night, October 21, that Foreign Minister Sugiono will participate in the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, from October 22-24. Sugiono will be accompanied by the Director General of Multilateral Cooperation of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tri Tharyat, and other delegation members.
Havas stated that Sugiono's first task as Foreign Minister is to attend the economic bloc conference consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and so the latter could not yet reveal the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' work plan for the next five years at this time.
“[We will announce] the detail later,” Havas said.
Previously, former foreign minister Retno Marsudi confirmed that the Indonesian representative to the BRICS Summit was determined by President Prabowo Subianto.
Retno also mentioned that Prabowo had been invited to attend the summit but declined due to the need to focus on the government's transition following his inauguration as President along with Gibran Rakabuming Raka as the Vice President on October 20.
Indonesia's decision to join BRICS is ultimately up to the Prabowo government. “We continue to provide input to the newly elected president regarding BRICS issues,” Retno stated on September 5, as reported by Antara.
Retno admitted to having communicated with Prabowo about BRICS as soon as he was declared the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election.
According to Retno, Indonesia received an invitation to join BRICS during the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2023. However, the decision to become a member depends on Indonesia's assessment of the potential economic benefits.
