TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) has strongly condemned China's recent military exercises conducted around Taiwan on October 14, 2024. TETO asserts that these actions violate the rules-based international order and threaten regional peace and stability.
In an official statement, Taiwan called upon Indonesia and the international community to pressure China to immediately cease its military provocations. Taiwan urged countries in the region to unite in condemning Beijing's actions and demanding an end to all activities that undermine the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.
“Taiwan calls on all levels of Indonesian society to recognize the expansion of China's authoritarian nature and to take concrete actions in support of democratic Taiwan at this critical moment,” said John Chen, Representative of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office, in his statement on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.
Chen slammed China for ignoring President Lai Ching-te's goodwill gesture towards China during his Double Tenth National Day speech and instead launching military exercises targeting Taiwan. These actions are seen as intimidation tactics aimed at threatening Taiwan's democracy, unilaterally disrupting the status quo of the Taiwan Strait, and jeopardizing regional peace and stability.
“President Lai clearly reiterates that maintaining peace and stability in the region is a shared goal and responsibility for both sides of the Taiwan Strait, as well as in the best interests of all parties in the region,” Chen said.
Furthermore, Chen emphasized Taiwan's commitment to upholding democratic values, protecting regional peace and stability, and demonstrating its determination to defend democracy to the world. Taiwan urged China to choose a path of peace and avoid escalating tensions.
Chen noted the strong ties between Indonesia and Taiwan, emphasizing their shared values of democracy, law, freedom, and human rights. With over 400,000 Indonesian citizens living, studying, and working in Taiwan, the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait are vital to Indonesia's economic interests and the interests of ASEAN countries.
In recent years, China has intensified its military activities around Taiwan, with daily incursions of aircraft and ships. TETO called upon Indonesia to leverage its influence as a leading ASEAN member to urge China to halt these provocative actions and de-escalate regional tensions.
“To counter China's authoritarian expansion, we must unite in defending the values of freedom and democracy, upholding a rules-based international order, and preserving freedom, openness, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region,” Chen concluded.
