TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Twelve Indonesian athletes will represent their country at the 2025 Badminton World Championships, held from August 25-31. Of the twelve, three will be making their debut at this prestigious tournament. Who are they?
Here's a look at the rising stars competing for the first time on the world stage.
1. Alwi Farhan
Alwi Farhan did not expect to compete in the World Championships this year. The men's singles player received an invitation after Denmark's Viktor Axelsen withdrew due to an ongoing injury. With Alwi at the top of the waiting list, the opportunity fell to him, and he accepted on August 8, 2025.
"I am so grateful and happy. I didn't expect to play in the World Championships. I'm excited because it's my first time, but I have to keep my emotions in check. I will make the most of this opportunity and gain as much experience as possible," he said.
Alwi, who recently secured his first title at the BWF Super 300 Macau Open 2025 on Sunday, August 3, is determined to perform at his best during his debut. "I will give my best and prepare myself well," he added.
2. Sabar/Reza
The second debutant team is the men's doubles pair Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Muhammad Reza Pahlevi Isfahani, or Sabar/Reza. They will enter the tournament as the eighth seed.
In their last major tournament, Sabar/Reza fell short of the title at the 2025 Indonesia Open. They were defeated in the final by South Korea's Kim Won Ho/Seo Seung Jae with a score of 21-18, 19-21, 12-21 in a match that lasted just over an hour.
3. Jafar/Felisha
Jafar Hidayatullah and Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu, aged 22 and 20 respectively, have already demonstrated their ability to compete at the elite level.
This assessment was shared by the head coach of the mixed doubles national training camp for Badminton Indonesia (PBSI), Rionny Mainaky. Their impressive victory at the 2025 Taiwan Open and their semifinal appearance at the 2025 Asian Championship serve as a testament to their skill and potential.
Arkhelaus Wisnu Triyogo, Rini Widiastuti, and Randy Fauzi Febriansyah contributed to the report.
