TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Social media has taken a key position in the lives of Indonesian people. Not only as a means of communication, but also as a space for social interaction, entertainment, a source of information, and a marketing medium.
A report from Statista showed that as of February 2025, the number of active social media users in Indonesia reached 143 million people. This figure positions Indonesia as the third-highest in the Asia Pacific region and the highest in Southeast Asia.
Based on data from Similarweb as of August 1, 2025, here are the most used social media platforms in Indonesia:
1. WhatsApp
WhatsApp remains the most popular social media application in Indonesia. Its function as an instant communication tool, through text messages, voice calls, and video calls, makes it irreplaceable in daily life. In addition, the group features and WhatsApp Business also strengthen its position as the main communication platform, for both personal and business purposes.
2. Instagram
Instagram is in second place with its dominance for visual content. This platform is the primary choice for Indonesians to share photos, videos, and daily stories. The Reels and Stories features continue to attract attention, especially from the young generation who enjoy following entertainment trends, lifestyles, and creative content.
3. X (Twitter)
X, formerly known as Twitter, ranks third. This platform remains an active space for public conversations, where users follow the latest news, opinions, and discussions on various topics. Its fast and real-time nature makes it an instantly reliable source of information.
4. TikTok
TikTok ranks fourth as a center for short video-based entertainment. With a strong algorithm, this platform is able to present content according to user interests. TikTok's popularity in Indonesia is also supported by numerous local creators who produce creative, educational, and entertaining content.
5. Facebook
Facebook remains a strong presence in Indonesia, despite being present for a long time. Many Indonesians use it to connect with family, communities, and to run online businesses through the Marketplace feature. Although the younger generation tends to prefer other platforms, the user base of Facebook in Indonesia remains significant.
