TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - A short film titled 2Yoel by Communication Science students at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY) succeeded in achieving an accomplishment in an international event earlier this month. The film directed by Ergia Maharani Putri won the Best Fiction Short Film Award in the Comedy category at the 7th PRISM UBD Short Film Festival 2024 held by the University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
"This is our first film as a team, and we are thrilled that it has been well-received by the audience and made it to a festival, a long-time dream that has finally come true," said Ergia on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
Film Synopsis of 2Yoel
The film 2Yoel tells the story of a tuyul entity who must complete its mission to influence a child named Alif. However, Alif is a very religious child, which makes the tuyul's task even more challenging.
In the midst of this difficulty, the tuyul must face significant challenges, including enduring hot temperatures to carry out its mission. One night, when Alif forgets to recite his prayers before sleeping, the tuyul sees an opportunity to invite Alif into its civilization.
Inspired by Myths
Ergia explained that the story idea for this film was inspired by a myth portraying the civilization of jin beings as more advanced than that of humans. This myth was then adapted with daily life narratives to resonate with the audience.
Ergia admitted facing formidable challenges when developing the screenplay for the film. "Moreover, this film delves into the comedy genre while addressing religious issues," she said. "So, we had to be very cautious in crafting the storyline, as tackling religious issues in a film can be quite sensitive." She hopes that the story in this film can be accepted by all audiences.
She emphasized that her short film blending religion and comedy distinguishes it from similar films. Besides bringing humor, Ergia aims to convey light messages about religion that are highly relevant to everyday life.
She pointed out that this film was intentionally made child-friendly, so it could be enjoyed by people of all ages. Through the film 2Yoel, Ergia hopes that the audience can take away many positive messages, such as the importance of not stealing and the necessity of safeguarding faith, especially from an early age.
"Despite numerous external influences, we have to remember that our faith is determined by ourselves, how we choose to remain faithful or not," she said.
