TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The UN Information Center in Indonesia (UNIC) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) commemorated International Disability Day on December 3, 2024, and Human Rights Day on December 10, 2024, by organizing a series of events in Jakarta to foster inclusivity.
This event, held from December 5 to 7, 2024, at Taman Ismail Marzuki in Jakarta, featured a diverse program including film screenings, art exhibitions, inclusive fashion shows, and workshops. The film screening was conducted in collaboration with Bumilangit Entertainment, the United Nations Association of Indonesia (UNAI), and the (International Labour Organization) ILO, as part of the "Kerja Layak untuk Semua" or "Decent Work for All" campaign.
"This event is not merely about finding solutions, but also about celebrating the inherent humanity and diverse abilities and creativity of all individuals,” emphasized Miklos Gaspar, Director of UNIC Jakarta.
The Disability Creative Week marks the second collaboration between the UN and Bumilangit Entertainment, that began the previous year. This year's event showcases over 70 unique objects and activities, encompassing visual arts, performing arts, oral history, inclusive fashion, and technology, all created by talented individuals with disabilities in Indonesia.
A highlight of this year's creative week is the screening of the film "Sundul Langit" directed by a visually impaired filmmaker and featuring a script penned by a deaf writer. This film narrates the inspiring story of a deaf student navigating life within an inclusive school environment.
Another captivating event is a fashion show presented by the Layak Community, a platform that empowers individuals with disabilities to express themselves with confidence and grace.
“Fashion is a universal language,” remarked Karina Aprilia from Layak. “Through the fashion industry, we aim to redefine traditional notions of beauty and empower individuals to embrace their unique identities. In addition to empowerment, we also provide distinctive educational opportunities.”
Complementing the art exhibition, a curated selection of artworks created by artists with disabilities will be showcased, celebrating their unique perspectives and significant contributions to creative expression. Workshops facilitated by the ILO and APINDO will provide practical strategies to foster inclusivity in the workplace, reinforcing the vision of equality and equal opportunities for all.
“Through this initiative, we encourage society to re-evaluate their perceptions and embrace a more inclusive mindset,” stated Gaspar. “Art and fashion serve as powerful catalysts, stimulating meaningful conversations and inspiring positive change.”
ILO data indicates that 6 percent of the global population, or 1 in 6 individuals, experiences significant disabilities, with approximately 80 percent of this population being of working age. However, the rights of people with disabilities to secure decent work are frequently overlooked.
In Indonesia, according to the 2020 National Census, approximately 38.8 million individuals are identified as having disabilities. However, disability labor force indicators from the ILO reveal that nearly 90 percent of people with disabilities in Indonesia are unemployed. Many of them working are in the informal sector. Alarmingly, around 80 percent of young people with disabilities face significant barriers to accessing employment, education, or training opportunities.
