TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) mentioned that Palestinian residents in northern Gaza are on the brink of death due to the increasing Israeli attacks in the region. According to UNRWA, the people in northern Gaza are struggling to meet their basic needs.
"Our staff reported that they couldn't find food, water, or medical treatment," said UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, as quoted from Anadolu on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
Lazzarini said the dire conditions in Gaza can be seen from the numerous bodies that are easily found.
"The smell of death is everywhere because bodies lie on the streets or under the rubble. Missions to clean up the bodies or provide humanitarian aid are being rejected," he said.
The Israel military has escalated their massive attacks in northern Gaza amidst a blockade that has resulted in tens of thousands of people lacking food and water. According to Palestinian health authorities, more than 600 people have died and thousands have been injured since the attacks began on October 5.
"In northern Gaza, people are just waiting for death," Lazzarini said. "They feel abandoned, desperate, and lonely. They are living from hour to hour, afraid of dying every second."
Furthermore, the head of UNRWA called for an immediate ceasefire to allow for safe humanitarian mobilization for families who want to leave northern Gaza.
"Throughout the previous year's conflict, some UNRWA staff stayed in the north and did the impossible to provide assistance to internal refugees," he said. "This is the minimum action to save the lives of civilians who have no connection to this conflict."
According to Anadolu's report, Israel's attack on northern Gaza is the latest episode in Israel's genocide war that has killed more than 42,700 people, mostly women and children, and injured nearly 100,300 others since last year following Hamas's attacks.
Israel's war in Gaza has led to almost the entire population of the region becoming displaced amid an ongoing blockade that has resulted in food, clean water, and medicine shortages.
Israel is facing a genocide case in the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.
