TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming inspected one of the sites affected by flash floods and landslides in Sukabumi Regency on Friday, December 6, 2024. During his visit, Gibran visited the evacuation post at SDN 2 Tegalpanjang and the Sukamaju Village Office to conduct dialogues and check the conditions of the affected residents.

Gibran also distributed food, books, toys, and milk to the refugees. The Vice President gave instructions to the authorities to ensure that the emergency response was swift, coordinated, and focused. He asked the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), as well as other related agencies, to expedite the mapping of disaster-prone areas and to evacuate residents still in danger zones.

Through a written statement on Friday, December 6, 2024, the Vice President's Office said Gibran emphasized the importance of prioritizing the treatment of refugees, including the provision of basic needs such as food, clean water, medicine, and temporary shelter. "Realizing President Prabowo's commitment for his staff to act quickly and responsively in handling disasters," the statement read.

The son of the 7th president, Joko Widodo, also ordered that affected infrastructure such as roads and other public facilities be immediately repaired to facilitate the mobility of residents and aid. The former mayor of Solo urged the public to remain vigilant against possible secondary disasters, as heavy rains are expected in the coming days.

Head of BNPB Suharyanto in his press statement conveyed that his institution together with the West Java provincial government, regencies/cities, police and military, and all volunteers were determined to handle the affected residents to completion.

Continuous heavy rains for the past three days have caused hydro-meteorological disasters in the Cianjur and Sukabumi regency, West Java. A series of disasters such as flash floods, landslides, and earth movements have claimed 4 lives, while 6 others are still missing.

Cianjur Regency and Sukabumi Regency have declared a state of emergency to deal with the potential impact of extreme weather before the New Year 2025. The government noted that in Sukabumi Regency, 38 sub-districts and 101 villages have been affected by the disaster.
