TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian national team coach Sumardji said that the team led by Shin Tae-yong is aiming to reach the final stage of the 2024 AFF Cup. He said that the target is measured by the overview of the skills of the Garuda squad, which is undergoing a training camp in Bali from Tuesday, November 26 to December 5, 2024.
"Yes, there is already a glimpse of the final. Whether it's the final or if we finish as runners-up, we have to prepare for that. If the players are ready," he said when contacted by Tempo on Tuesday, November 26, 2024.
Coach Shin Tae-yong has called up 33 players for the ASEAN Cup 2024. Most of the names on the list are U-22 players, but there are also a few abroad players who have played in the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
"We are indeed using young players for the sake of development and regeneration. It is also for the SEA Games," Sumardji said.
Throughout December 2024, the Indonesian national team will play in Group B matches. In the first match, Indonesia will face Myanmar in Thuwunna, Myanmar on Monday, December 9, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The Garuda will then host Laos at the Manahan Solo Stadium on December 12, 2024, at 8 p.m. WIB.
In the third match, the Garuda squad will play away with Vietnam at the Phu Tho Provincial Stadium, Viet Tri on December 12, 2024, at 8 p.m. Six days later, Indonesia will host the Philippines at the Manahan Solo Stadium, at 8 p.m WIB.
Though Shin Tae-yong is preparing for the match with mostly U-22 national team players, he is also giving opportunities to young players such as Arkhan Kaka (Persis Solo), Kadek Arel (Bali United), and Dony Tri Pamungkas (Persija Jakarta).
Star players such as Marselino Ferdinan (Oxford United) and Ronaldo Kwateh (Muangthong United) are also expected to be Shin Tae-yong's upfront, alongside Rafael Struick (Brisbane Roar).
Referring to the distinctive style of the South Korean coach, the Indonesians are likely to play a 3-5-2 formation. However, apart from Marselino Ferdinan, who will be tasked with supporting two strikers, Rafael Struick is unlikely to play in the first round.
Marselino is likely to play alongside Ronaldo Kwateh and Hokky Caraka. This is because Brisbane Roar is reportedly only willing to release Struick if Indonesia secures a place in the semi-finals of the 2024 AFF Cup.
