TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has again evacuated Indonesian citizens (WNI) affected by the conflict in Syria. On December 13, 2024, a total of 30 Indonesian citizens were evacuated from Syria and arrived safely in Indonesia on December 15, 2024. This is the second wave of the series of evacuations of Indonesian citizens in Syria.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia explained in its statement that, like the previous evacuation wave, this second wave was carried out via land routes by crossing the Masnaa border to reach Lebanon, followed by a flight to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The Indonesian citizens come from various regions in Indonesia, namely Aceh, Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, Central Sulawesi, and South Sulawesi.
The 30 Indonesian citizens who arrived in Indonesia on December 15, 2024, consist of 25 women and 5 men. Most of the Indonesian citizens in Syria are migrant workers (TKI/TKW).
Previously, Indonesia evacuated 35 Indonesian citizens in the first evacuation wave on December 12, 2024. Thus, the total number of Indonesian citizens who have been evacuated from Syria by the Government is 65 people.
Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia continues to carry out data collection and communicate with Indonesian citizens in Syria regarding their willingness to evacuate to their homeland. According to previous data, 1,162 Indonesian citizens reside in Syria, 65 of whom have returned to the homeland, and 84 Indonesian citizens have expressed a desire to return to the homeland.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and the Indonesian Embassy in Damascus continue to closely monitor the security situation in Syria. The security situation in Syria is very dynamic, including Israel still launching attacks on Syria. Considering this, the Alert One status across Syria, which has been in effect since December 7, 2024, remains maintained until this news is released.
Indonesia has taken various protection measures for Indonesian citizens, such as intensive coordination between Ministries/Agencies, updating the Contingency Plan including evacuation routes, online meetings with Indonesian citizens in Syria, and coordination with the local government to ensure a safe corridor for the movement of Indonesian citizens to the border.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia urges Indonesian citizens to pay attention to developments in the security situation in Syria, increase vigilance, avoid vulnerable locations as well as crowd gatherings, minimize unnecessary movements, and maintain close communication with the Indonesian Embassy in Damascus and fellow Indonesian citizens (WNI). For families who have relatives in Syria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia also urges them to contact the Directorate of Protection of Indonesian Citizens' Hotline through the contact number: +6281-290-070-027, and the Indonesian Embassy in Damascus Hotline through the contact number: +963 954 444 810
