TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former governor of Jakarta Anies Baswedan firmly believes that the people of the capital city are capable of measuring, weighing, and comparing the candidate pairs they will choose for the role of Governor and Deputy Governor.
He made the statement in response to queries about former President Joko Widodo or Jokowi’s interference in gubernatorial elections, including in Jakarta.
Anies emphasized the significant challenges facing Jakarta as a global and modern city. He expressed the need for leaders who possess a deep understanding of the city's issues and the aspirations of its people.
“We need leadership that is not based on trial and error or experimentation,” he stated after casting his vote at Polling Station 029 Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta, on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
Anies stressed the importance of knowledge and experience in leading Jakarta. He highlighted the need for leaders who are empathetic towards the people, particularly the marginalized groups.
“Leading Jakarta requires the utilization of knowledge and expertise from qualified individuals. We shouldn't rely solely on experimentation,” he added.
Meanwhile, Jokowi's pledge to observe a "political fast" for a month after leaving office was short-lived. Less than a month after his term ended, he gathered his supporters and top officials from the political parties backing a candidate pair Ridwan Kamil-Suswono at Kaizen Heritage, Central Jakarta, on November 18, 2024.
Subsequently, he declared his support for Ridwan Kamil in the Jakarta gubernatorial election. Jokowi expressed confidence in Ridwan Kamil-Suswono's ability to defeat Pramono Anung-Rano Karno in the election. He drew parallels between the 2024 Jakarta election and the 2024 presidential election, which was won by the Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka ticket.
“If the movement is massive, it could be similar to the presidential election. [At that time,] our prediction was a 51% victory, but the actual result was 58.5%,” Jokowi said.
